Defining and classifying ecosystem services more accurately and consistently

Overview

To what extent can we strengthen how ecosystem services are defined and classified by improving accuracy and consistency? Analysis of the literature clearly demonstrates a wide range of definitions and classification frameworks currently in use, hampering the comparability and generality of study results. In this project, we examine the strengths and limitations of existing ways of defining and classifying ecosystem services. We then suggest a path forward that recognizes that ecosystem services are complex, braided causal pathways. The implications include how ecosystem services are monitored, reported, and managed.
