Mapping Canadian agricultural multifunctionality

Overview

Multifunctional agriculture is important to preserving the social and ecological landscapes that Canadians love. Yet we have little understanding of why multifunctional agriculture exists or thrives in some places and not in others. Is it the geology, geography, or ecology of a place? Is it something about the social networks, government policies, or economics? Do strong local leaders play an outsized role? And how do these factors interact with each other? This project looks for examples of particularly multifunctional landscapes across Canada and investigates the question of how different people and places have fostered multifunctional agriculture. We hope to use these lessons to encourage multifunctional agriculture elsewhere, and other multifunctional working landscapes more broadly.
